Foreground
My primary objective is making sure my clients have a website that works for them. It should do exactly want they want and what they need for their project to be successful.
I am more consultant than anything else, combining my experience of the world with my knowledge of the Internet. I can talk to anybody about the Internet, but don’t expect me to talk about techie stuff. It is all expressed in layman’s terms.
I can, and do, create websites – I did this one and quite a few others over the years. Some are still available, some have now gone. Most of my sites are fairly undemanding in terms of the technical or design skills required but a lot of them are quite large and contain huge amounts of information. So the logical structure of the website and how all the content hangs together is very important.
My role is to provide what a client needs. If that requires me to involve somebody else in some way that is what I will do. It’s all a process of matching skill sets to the job in hand – always with an eye on the budget and what is affordable and necessary.
That is another part of my service. Telling my clients how a business need can be solved by using the Internet and how much that is likely to cost.
If you don’t have the budget to do the job, don’t take on the task. If something is worth doing, do it properly.
You can’t cut corners with websites.
There are always "cheap" ways of completing a project - either by using low grade software or inexperienced designers. But these options generally end up costing more through lost business, not maximising the opportunities available or empoying my skills to redesign and relaunch the site.
Your potential viewers are very demanding in what they expect from their online experiences. If your website doesn’t come up to their high standards you’ve lost them, they’ll click away from your site and go somewhere else.
Websites that are created to provide information need to do so very quickly, the information should be easily accessed with the minimum amount of clicks. That is delivered by having a well thought out site structure and menu system.
Websites that are selling something are a bit different. They should be able to take the buyer’s money as soon as possible with the least amount of fuss and at the highest level of security possible – time and time again. That’s a bit simplistic, there is a bit more involved.
